So we had parents evening on Tuesday. All in all I think he is busy and being made to expand his thinking rather than being forced onwards e.g. they gave him a big light box and a small heavy box and asked which one did he think was heaviest etc.
We asked for better reading books and she agree to put him up one level. Which isn't anywhere near his level but is a step in the right direction. She agreed to do another reading assessment (lets hope it comes close to showing what he can read)- we explained that he was reading the two school books and then a Frog and Toad story at home.
At pick up on Wed she said that they can't test him because 'it will invalidate thier results' I am really annoyed with this.
She said that he would definately go up a year for maths in the summer term (Apr-July), and i pushed for Spring, and she said they would consider it. I said that they could try it, if it's obvious he can't cope then he doesn't have to go again for a while - it's not permanent.I was shocked that they had decided this! It seemed odd to me that they did it last year and then have retracted it. now they seem to be doing things that fill in the paper work.
We discussed some of his 'traits'; his perfectionism, that he does have a touch sensitivity (not extreme but still there), that he always thinks about things long after the time has past, the effort only in things that he wants to do and the fact it only takes one or two repetitions for him to completely understand something - which she had noticed .So i am satisfied...i'm not 100% happy BUT i don't think i ever will be with a school (i have issues about schools in general). He is enjoying playing.
His behaviour at school is fine. At home he whines, is hitting/pushing Lani, answering back, is moody and very emotional. Is see red flags for what happened at preschool (he got depressed). We told her this and she noted it down. Part of me wonders whether he is just tired, but he is fine at the weekend. He comes home from school and we do an 1hr of something at his request.

I wish we had a school that would do at least what yours is. We get complaints Payton isn't paying attention or focusing, yet he isn't paying attention because he doesn't need to hear the story 4 times before the test. I talk to them about testing him out early, accelerating his math, it's met with deaf ears.
Get this. I wanted to copy a chapter out of a book on how to keep gifted kids motivated. The copy was for his TEACHER. The school wouldn't let me copy it there. What the...?
How did you get them to seriously consider accelerating him?
What a pain for you! Could you not lend her the book? - marked out with the approapriate sections etc?
We didn't actually do anything. They did it at the end of last year when they realised he is beyond 'learning numbers to 10'. Then this term zilch but they will do it at the end of this year...(?)
I was pretty shocked that they are gonna do this, but i'm bothered by it as he entered this year knowing all the math, yet they won't accelerate until the end of the year. It kind of feels like carrot on a string...
Are there and end-of-year tests he can do to prove he has completed the material?
