Kayne has been asking for 'hard' maths again, he has been trying out adding 3 numbers for a while and has been using higher nmbers. His mental arthimatic sped is increasing - sometimes he is quicker than me. He wanted to do 9+9+9 so i said 'try 9+9' and he answered 18 in a heartbeat.
He found some exercise books in WHSmiths and wanted us to buy them. So he has been doing about a page in there everytime he decideds we have to do 'maths'. I let him have a calculator one day to 'check' his answers. After a while he was just playing with it and asked me 'what is that bit for?' He had made a minus number- so i explained that numbers continue below 0 that we measure things like temperature below zero, and we call them 'minus numbers'. I showed him a couple of examples using a number line like 3-4 and 6-8 and then he carried on playing with his calculator.
Yesterday he came to me and said ' 5-7 is -2, isn't it?' yes '4-5 is -1, isn't it?' yes it is '8-8-8 is -8, isn't it?' uhhh...yes. So i guess that he gets negative numbers?
This evening after finishing reading our book together, He said to me 'How many fillometers are in my cup?'. He has spent most of the afternoon playing with plastic glasses and a tub of water whilst lani has spent the afternoon in a tub of water....
